Uzbekistan Presidential Election Results
Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has called for an early presidential election on July 9, 2023, citing the need to reform and balance all branches of power as mandated by the new Constitution. This follows a Constitutional Referendum held on April 30, 2023, where amendments were approved, resetting the term limits for the incumbent president.
Previously elected in 2021 for a second five-year term, the amendments now allow Mirziyoyev to run for two more terms, potentially extending his time in office until 2037. The 65-year-old president is expected to win the election by a wide margin, with three token rivals. The amendments not only reset Mirziyoyev's previous and current terms but also extended future presidential terms from five to seven years, giving him the possibility to remain in power until he reaches the age of 79.
